The primary function of the sign was to display current and upcoming film screenings and to generally draw attention to the theatre from the high volume of passers by. There were distinct limitations on content creation and management that conventional ‘pre-production’ of daily/weekly animations would not suffice. There was neither the time nor the budget to create motion graphics for the screen on a weekly basis, the management side alone would have been crippling to production. One of our programmers, Manjit, had been working with a ‘generative’ graphics application developed by Apple. Manjit proposed we use this application to generate the graphics in real-time. After several weeks working with Nathan, Urban’s technical director, they pulled together a system that used a blog to generate tasteful real-time graphics for the sign.
[MEDIA=1]
The motion design was based upon several factors, a look that would work with the aesthetic of the building itself, and more importantly, a timing based upon the 30 sec. ‘viewing window’ of most passers by.

In 2004 we were asked by Nike to design a presentation environment for the launch of the “Art of Speed” launch at the Coachella music festival near Palm Springs, California. This was no easy task, both the time line and general conditions of a festival setting posed extreme limitations on what we could execute on-site. Nike creative staff in Oregon had initially asked us for something akin to a wind tunnel with a floating presentation screen. As the process moved forward we submitted several sketches outlining initial design ideas. As the time line was incredibly short, we could fabricate very little and had to rely on readily available temporary structures such as marquee tents and trussing normally used by stage lighting designers. In our final round of the design process we were informed by the festival that only standard marquee tents were allowed to be used by any and all sponsors on site, including Nike.
